Under the Influence
Apr 17th
Have you ever had a cold drink outside on a really warm day? Have you noticed that the longer your cold drink is exposed to the warmer environment , it becomes more like the temperature around it? The influence of the warmer temperature is too much for the cold drink to withstand and eventually it becomes the same temperature as the air around it. Putting an insulating material around your drink will help for a while, but eventually the warmer temperatures will overcome that, leaving you with an unsatisfying, very warm drink. As Christians we need to be very careful about the environment that we allow ourselves to be in. In 2 Corinthians 6:14, it states, “Be ye not unequally yoked with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?” If we spend too much time with unbelievers, we will eventually began to look more and more like them in our actions, our words, and our deeds. This is very unsatisfying to our God, who calls us to be set apart from worldly things. Don’t allow yourself to be influenced by the worldly things around you. Be that light in the darkness that God has called you to be.
MEMORY LOSS
Jan 7th
I am currently in a challenge to read through my bible in 90 days. As I read through the Old Testament, it comes to my mind that the people of Israel must have suffered severe memory loss. As God instructs Moses to lead His people out of slavery in Egypt, He brings not one but ten plagues on the Pharaoh and his people to demonstrate His mighty power.
After the children of Israel left Egypt, the Pharaoh decides to pursue them. When the children of Israel saw the Pharaoh drawing near, they began to complain to Moses as to why he would bring them to the wilderness to die and how much better off they were in Egypt as slaves. However, God delivers His people from the hand of Pharaoh by drowning the Egyptians in the Red Sea.
Is Jesus the Hero of your sermon?
Dec 17th

*the following is a reprint from an article I submitted for the www.garbcquest.org website.
It is a week before the celebration of Christmas and all the attention is on the God-man Jesus. The promised Messiah born to the virgin Mary. Christmas is the story of Jesus taking on humanity, so that He could conquer death and sin through his death in our place! The Christmas story puts the spotlight on the birth of the hero of human history, Jesus!
Recently I came across an interview with a well-known preacher of our day, and in this interview he shared several questions he asks himself before preaching. The last question he would ask of his sermon was this, “How is Jesus the hero? The Bible is one story in which Jesus is the hero. Therefore, to properly teach/preach the Bible we have to continually lift Him up as the hero…”
Standard of Living
Nov 29th
As a medical lab technician, one of my duties is to ensure that the analyzer that I will be using for the day is working correctly. One way to ensure that the instrument is working properly is by using quality control material or known standards. These quality control samples have predetermined ranges and as long as the analyzer is reading measurements within these ranges then it is acceptable to turn out patient results from the instrument. If any measurements fall outside of the ranges and I am not able to correct the problem, then the instrument is out of control and unacceptable to use for patient testing.
Discipleship
Nov 15th
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” After Jesus’ resurrection, he meets with his eleven disciples on a mountain in Galilee and commands them to spread the gospel by making disciples of all nations.
As Christians, He expects the same from you and I today. At anytime and at anyplace, an opportunity may arise for you to share the love of Jesus Christ with someone who doesn’t know Him. A few years ago, Jennifer was going to a chiropractor in Huntingburg for some lower back trouble. One day in particular he chose to share his faith with Jennifer by telling her that only 3% of the human population would make it to Heaven. Although the accuracy of this statement may be questionable, the results are not. This simple statement led Jennifer to ask more questions and eventually to accept Jesus as her Lord and Savior and through Jennifer’s commitment, led me back to obedience in the Lord and more growth in my Christian life than I have ever known.
Guiding Light
Sep 20th
The title is not in reference to a popular soap opera on television, but rather to a guiding light in a world of darkness. As Christians, we have the Holy Spirit to act as a guiding light in a world filled with sin and darkness. In John 14 beginning with verse 25 Jesus states “All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” The Holy Spirit is more than just a moral teacher, He is a righteousness teacher. He is that still small voice inside us that lets us know the right thing to do in Jesus’ name. “When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment”. John 16:8.
All You Can Eat Buffet
Sep 6th
As a Baptist, I love to eat, and an all you can eat buffet is like heaven on earth to me. For a one time price, I can eat as much food and drink that I want and not be charged any extra. However, for some reason, no matter how much I eat and stuff myself at a buffet, I am still hungry the next day. No matter how satisfied I am when I leave the buffet, there is always the need to eat the next day. Many people are like this in life. They try to use drugs, alcohol, pornography, money and a host of other things in an effort to find something that will satisfy them and fill up the emptiness inside of them. Sadly, they are left emptier and even more unsatisfied when depending on the things of this world to fulfill them.
Cruise Control
Aug 30th
Many times while taking the boys to daycare I would set the cruise control on my truck. I would take the same road everyday and after a few trips I began to notice something every time I went up a certain hill. About half way up the hill, the truck would sense that it was losing speed and would overcompensate by revving up the engine just to maintain its current speed. I thought to myself, what a silly truck. We have been down this road a hundred times. It should know that this hill is coming. If I had been in control of the truck and seen the hill ahead, I would have been prepared for it and adjusted my speed accordingly.
Truckers Welcome
Aug 23rd
While driving on a recent family vacation, I had the opportunity to read hundreds of billboards. Every once in a while something would catch my eye on a billboard. On some of the billboards would be advertisements for some type of restaurant or other establishment and it would say “truckers welcome”.
This really got me to thinking. Are there places where truckers are not welcome? Are there places in this country where people are not allowed based on either their profession or how they look? How about in your church? Do we only welcome people who look a certain way, talk a certain way, or who are dressed a certain way? Do we exclude welcoming people into our church based on the fact that they are different than us or that they don’t meet certain self-imposed standards?
Ask and Ye Shall Receive
Aug 16th
Christians have it easy right. All we have to do is ask God for whatever we want and He will give it to us. After all, this is what the Bible says, “ask and ye shall receive“. If this was really true there would be a lot of millionaire Christians out there, not to mention no divorce, no disease, or children being abused, just to name a few. If God gave us everything we asked for, there would be a lot less bad things in this world, that is for sure. But what if God really did give us everything we asked for, how would this change our attitude toward Him. For one thing, if we got everything we wanted in this world, then there would be no longing for something better; there would be no desire in our heart to be with Him in heaven. Like a spoiled child, if we are given everything that we want, it is never enough; we always want more and never appreciate what we have been given.
