Body Building For Christ
In an effort to improve my physical condition and to build muscle, I have recently begun to lift weights and exercise again. Every time I exercise, I am reminded of how much dedication and commitment is needed in order to achieve the desired results. Working out one time a week will not produce the results that working out five times a week will, and so you must invest the time in order to achieve your goal. An interesting fact associated with building muscle is that as you lift weights to build the muscle you are actually tearing the muscle down. As you rest and recuperate, your muscle will rebuild itself bigger and stronger so that it is better prepared to handle the stress from your next workout.
This reminds me so much of how we grow and mature as Christians, we need to be dedicated and committed to the Lord to see the results that He desires for our life. Exercising your spiritual muscle only once a week is not going to bring about the desired growth that God expects from believers. We need to be in God’s word daily if we expect to grow in Christ. Just as muscle is broken down before it rebuilds itself, sometimes God uses trials to break us down and test our faith.
James makes it clear to us in chapter 1, verses 2-4 to “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” Spiritual muscle is built through commitment and perseverance; and as part of the body of Christ, it is your job to help make the body stronger. In 1 Corinthians chapter 12 verse 12, we are told, “The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body.
So it is with Christ.” It continues in verse 26 by telling us, “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.” Let’s flex our spiritual muscle to lift up our Bibles, read God’s Word and start bodybuilding for Christ. I’ll see you in the “gym”.
In His Love,
